Rwanda, also a popular destination in Africa, has plenty of tourist attractions. The country boasts of hosting the popular Dian Fossey, who made the country famous as a gorilla destination. Visitors on African vacation safaris can pretty much indulge in the various destinations in Rwanda and also their incredible cultures.

Kenya and Tanzania are the savannah experts, crafting the best African safaris on their endless savannah grasslands and woodland plains. These two countries offer a front-row seat to visitors on the giant African podium in a quest for survival as predator and prey battle it out in the jungle game of survival for the fittest. These two countries also host the Great Migration. Travelers get to see a million wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and others migrate between Masai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park.

Top Destinations in East Africa

Some of the tourist destinations where African safari tours take place include the following.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Undoubtedly the best gorilla destination in the world, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s top gorilla hub. The park was gazetted as a national park in 1991 and gained the status of being a world heritage UNESCO site three years after its establishment in 1994. The park is famous for hosting the mountain gorillas, which are considered the world’s most endangered primate species. Over 459 mountain gorillas are sheltered in this park, of the 1,063 mountain gorillas left in the wild today. Therefore, Bwindi hosts the most mountain gorillas in the entire world. While on Uganda gorilla safaris, visitors can embark on a gorilla trekking experience and encounter these primates in their natural environment.

Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda’s most popular tourist destination is Volcanoes National Park, located in the northern region of the country. It is a top gorilla destination offering a once-in-a-lifetime moment of encountering mountain gorillas. The park has over 300 mountain gorillas, thus the opportunity for visitors to spot these primates.

Amboseli National Park

This is Kenya’s undisputed national treasure, located in the southern region of the country. Amboseli National Park spans over 392 square kilometers, having been established in 1974. The large herds of the savannah African elephant and the views of the Kilimanjaro Mountain in Tanzania make it a popular destination.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is an incredible safari destination in Tanzania, stretching for over 14,763 square kilometers. Its massive size accounts for the large populations of wildlife, especially wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, buffaloes, black rhinos, lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, and antelopes, among others. The park hosts the annual wildebeest migration, which is considered the largest animal migration in the world and also doubles as a world wonder.

When it comes to the best safari activities, Africa has got you covered. Its vast tourist destinations are well equipped for the best safari activities, as highlighted below

Safari game drives.

Safari game drives involve a close encounter with some of Africa’s formidable wildlife species, well in the comfort and safety of your safari vehicle. These game drives take place along designated trails that lead the visitors straight to the wildlife.

Some of the best game drive destinations in Africa include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison falls national park, Maasai Mara National Reserve, Ngorongoro Crater, Akagera National Park, among others.

Great Migration safaris in Kenya & Tanzania.

Migration safaris are considered a world wonder after more than 1.5 million wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras migrate from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and back. These animals follow the rains during this time as the rains carry a sense of hope for new and fresh pasture.

Boat safaris

Various water bodies across Africa offer boat safaris where visitors are tasked to explore the aquatic life of Africa. While on a motorboat, visitors can spot a wide range of animals, like hippos, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and other aquatic species. Some of the places where these boat safaris happen include Kazinga channel, Victoria Nile, Lake Ihema, Lake Kivu, Lake Nakuru and Lake Victoria etc.

White water rafting

Adventures in Africa are not limited to only the wildlife but also other adventures like white water rafting. This activity involves battling the waterfalls in inflatable rafts as you test your endurance and adrenaline. The Kalagala Falls on River Nile in Jinja, Uganda, are a popular spot for white water rafting.

Hot air balloon safaris

The savannah plains of Akagera National Park, Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve are the best for hot air ballooning. These hot air balloon safaris are more like game drives, however, here the visitors are flying in a hot air balloon with incredible aerial views of the wildlife and vast savannah beneath them.

Cultural safaris

Africa is a multicultural continent, meaning it has various cultures that can be explored on cultural safaris. These cultures come with their unique traditions, like norms, values, and beliefs. Some of the famous cultural safaris include Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania, Karamojong of Uganda, and Batwa of Uganda and Rwanda.

Plan Your Gorilla Safaris in

East Africa with Epic Uganda Vacation

With only 1,063 mountain gorillas left on earth, seeing them in the wild is done only in Africa. In particular, these critically endangered primates find shelter in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They survive only in the Virunga Conservation Area and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are Uganda’s gorilla destinations. Meanwhile, in Rwanda, you can only find mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park and in Virunga National Park in Congo.

About a half of the global mountain gorilla population has been recorded in Bwindi, while the Virunga Massif shelters the rest. It is only in the Democratic Republic of Congo where one can find the mountain gorillas and the eastern lowland gorillas in the wild. Both Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks shelter eastern lowland gorillas. The total global population of eastern lowland gorillas in the wild is around 6,800. The best place to enjoy seeing the eastern lowland gorillas is Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

Gorilla trekking tours offer raw encounters with a habituated gorilla family in their natural home. Gorilla trekking involves a guided tour where a visitor is accompanied by experienced ranger guides to locate the gorilla family. Once the family is found, the visitor is allowed to spend 1-hour maximum seeing and photographing the gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park goes a step further by offering gorilla habituation experiences beside the standard gorilla trek. This offers visitors around 4 hours in the presence of a semi-habituated gorilla family.

Cost of gorilla trekking varies in the 3 countries, with Rwanda offering luxury adventures. A gorilla permit to Volcanoes National Park costs 1,500 US dollars per person. In Uganda, gorilla permits to either Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park costs only 800 US dollars per person. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, trekking mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park costs 400 US dollars per person. Trekking eastern lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park costs 400 US dollars.

In conclusion, traveling to the African continent will expose you to a myriad, wildlife species, cultures and scenic destinations. East Africa in particular is home to the Great Migration and the rare gorilla safaris. Explore exciting places like Masai Mara in Kenya and the Virunga Massif in Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. Witness the vast savannahs of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Akagera National Park in Rwanda. As planners of authentic tours, book your life-changing Africa safari tours with Epic Uganda Vacation.
